It is awesome to just STOP, draw your attention to the tense muscles in my body, and let it all go. You could try it now, it’s simple and free – close your eyes and draw your attention to your forehead, your face and neck, your shoulders, draw attention the the muscles, and then, let it all go. Let yourself relax! Relax your forehead, your face, your neck, your shoulders. Relax your brain! This is my favourite way to relax, and I love to sit, and just feel the relief. I love to move inward and listen. I love to let the thoughts just float away – I acknowledge each one as important, but not right now. Right now, I am relaxing. Right now, this is important. The benefits are almost instantaneous! When I open my eyes, i am composed, I am focused, and I am ready to go back to the thoughts that popped up and address each one. I love to relax! When I remember to, of course.
Sometimes I forget. It’s bizarre really, and lots of people do it too. When we’re hungry, our body tells us, and we listen and we eat. When we are tired, our body tells us, and we listen and we sleep (usually, unless you’re a 7 month old baby, apparently…). But we we are stressed, and our body tells us, by tensing and aching, what do we do? Do we relax? I try to, but sometimes I get so caught up in the stress, the oh-my-goodness-I-have-so-much-to-do-I-don’t-even-have-time-to-think-about-the-things-I-need-to-do-EEEEEK thoughts that race and dart through my mind, that I forget to stop and slow down.
I think this is a huge problem, and a very real problem in modern society: we either don’t ‘have time’ to relax, or we forget about the amazing benefits of relaxing, or we don’t know HOW to relax. You might think, “I don’t have time, I don’t have time to sit there and do nothing!”. Or maybe, you do try to relax, but it’s forced, kind of like “ok body, time to relax now. Ok, really, now. NOW! On the count of three, you will relax!”. That doesn’t seem very relaxing?!
The best time to relax… is when you think you don’t have time to relax!
Ain’t that the truth! I think modern society needs to place more importance on relaxing, and it’s time everyone learnt HOW!
